What is Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP)

Map is a stable form of vitamin C which is hydro-soluble, it is effective in skin brightening when used in conjunction with Ferulic acid and L-Ergothioneine. 

Unlike L-ascorbic acid, MAP does not degrade in formulas containing water, it remains stable in light and oxygen rich environments - which is a must when it comes to considering the effective shelf life of Kalonology’s Advanced Vitamin C Serum.

Studies have shown MAP to retain over 95% of its potency at 40 degrees centigrade without any pH adjustment required.

MAP is pH 7 and easily absorbed into the skin and is far less likely to cause irritation than ascorbic acid.

As an antioxidant, MAP is capable of protecting the skin from free radicals through the ‘donation’ of electrons which neutralise superoxide ions and peroxide which are generated when the skin is exposed to UV radiation.  

Free Radicals occur as damage to the cellular DNA, cell membrane and proteins - including collagen which manifest as signs of premature ageing of the skin.

The conversion and production of Vitamin-C reduces uneven distribution of melanin. 

Decreasing the synthesis of melanin decreases the appearance of uneven tone and dark spots.    

MAP has also been studied for its hydrating effect on the skin and its ability to reduce transepidermal water loss which is similar to moisture evaporating from the surface of the earth - retaining moisture or limiting water loss is a key element to our Advanced Vitamin C Serum in the fight against premature ageing.

Dehydrated skin is less effective as a protective barrier and the precursor to sensitive and irritated skin, MAP is a great ingredient to help avoid the longer term effects of sensitive skin.

We use vegan MAP in our Advanced Vitamin C serum. 

A word on L-ascorbic acid:

L-ascorbic acid is a pure form of Vitamin C - the body does not need to convert this form of Vitamin C as it does with MAP - but there is no getting away from the fact that L-ascorbic acid is an unstable molecule and the chances of benefiting from this pure form of Vitamin C is a little hit and miss - especially when you consider shelf life and the environment products may be subjected to during their time on the shelf.

Formulators need to bring the pH of their formulations right down to a pH of 3.5 or less and it needs other carriers to be able to penetrate the skin effectively - also, packaging should be airless and the product should be kept in a protective environment - if anyone is going to actually get any of the benefits.  

Our Advanced Vitamin C serum includes multiple sources of Vitamin C - we do not include l-ascorbic acid for the reasons above.

Kalonology’s Advanced Vitamin C Serum is a stable product with a natural pH and includes other powerhouse antioxidants such as Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (see our ingredients list for a detailed review of this ingredient which is another form of Vitamin C) Ferulic Acid and L-Ergothioneine - studies have suggested incorporating these ingredients to increase stability and improve penetration of the skin. 

A study published in the Journal for Investigative Dermatology found that Ferulic Acid stabilized the formulation and increased the protective capabilities of Vitamin C to UV A & B rays.
