What is Glycerin?

Glycerin is a colorless, odorless liquid that has been used for centuries in a variety of industries, including medicine, food, and cosmetics.

The origins of natural derived glycerin can be traced back to the soap-making industry. When oils and fats are mixed with a strong alkaline solution, such as lye, soap is produced along with glycerin as a byproduct.

This process is called saponification. The glycerin is then separated from the soap and purified to remove any impurities.

In the US during 2019, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel evaluated relevant data and concluded that glycerine: “is safe as a cosmetic ingredient in the practises of use and concentration” – as described in the panel’s safety assessment.

The report looked at maximum-use concentrations of up to 79.2% of glycerine in leave-on products and 99.4% in rinse-off products. Making glycerine an excellent choice for even the most sensitive skin types.

Glycerin has many scientifically proven benefits for the skin. Here are 10 of them:

  1. Moisturises the skin: Glycerin is a humectant, which means it attracts moisture from the air and binds it to the skin, helping to keep it hydrated and supple.

  2. Improves skin texture: Glycerin can help to improve the texture of the skin by making it smoother and more even.

  3. Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles: Glycerin can help to plump up the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

  4. Soothes dry, itchy skin: Glycerin has a cooling and soothing effect on the skin, making it ideal for use on dry, itchy skin.

  5. Protects the skin: Glycerin forms a protective layer on the skin, helping to prevent moisture loss and protect against environmental damage.

  6. Improves skin elasticity: Glycerin can help to improve the elasticity of the skin, making it look firmer and more youthful.

  7. Lightens dark spots: Glycerin can help to lighten dark spots and hyperpigmentation, giving the skin a more even tone.

  8. Reduces acne: Glycerin has antimicrobial properties that can help to reduce the occurrence of acne.

  9. Calms irritated skin: Glycerin can help to calm and soothe irritated skin, reducing redness and inflammation.

  10. Promotes wound healing: Glycerin can help to promote wound healing by keeping the skin moist and preventing scarring.

The good news is that glycerin has no known side effects, making it a safe and effective ingredient for use in skincare products.
